Au Naturel – BFA Senior Show 2018
I have always been drawn to rhythms, routines, cycles, and patterns in nature. I strive to recreate these special moments within nature through my work in fibers with natural dyes, screen-printing, and weaving. Humans sometimes think of nature as free, loose, and chaotic, but there is actually an immense amount of pattern and order to it all. I am especially drawn to creating textiles that people can enjoy and use everyday. I choose to work with fibers because it allows me to be meticulous and in control of the process. In this current body of work, I use natural dyes and patterns derived from nature to experience the beauty of the natural world in a functional and everyday way. This body of work is much about the process of making. With each piece, the dye and imagery is interconnected, as the imagery printed on the fabric is directly correlated to the natural dye that was used to dye it.
Ceramic Flower Pots – 2016
Traditionally, flower pots are vessels to hold earthly objects such as flowers and succulents. While most flower pots are smooth, pristine, and have clean surfaces, I have taken a different approach while making these. These flower pots are an exploration of texture and color through the process of Raku firing. Each vessel is unique during the oxidation process resulting in various glaze surfaces which creates a more organic feel connecting the clay to the earth.
